Online Doctor of Education (EdD) Programs in Nevada
Currently, there is only one school in Nevada that offers an online Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program. Touro University Nevada has an online EdD in Education Administration and Leadership that prepares educators and organizational leaders to improve educational outcomes across a wide variety of environments, from K-20 academic settings to healthcare. Offered through the school’s College of Health and Human Services’ School of Education, this program utilizes 100% online coursework to maximize flexibility for students, although students are required to attend two one-week intensives in June during their first and second years of enrollment (these intensives can be completed on-campus or virtually).
Touro University Nevada maintains regional accreditation through the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).
Schools in Nevada with Online EdD Programs
Touro University Nevada (TUN) is the only school in Nevada that currently offers an online Doctor of Education program. TUN offers an online EdD in Education Administration and Leadership through its School of Education, which is housed within the College of Health and Human Services. This 60-credit EdD program, which can be completed in approximately three years, consists of coursework that blends leadership principles and practices, advanced research methodologies, curriculum development frameworks, and program design and implementation strategies to prepare students to lead educational improvements in both academic and industry settings.
Students in the program take a set sequence of courses, beginning with foundational courses covering Perspectives and Current Issues in Education, Leadership in Education, Ethics and the Law, and Education Policy and Planning. They also take two foundational research courses, titled Research Methodology I: Quantitative; and Research Methodology II: Qualitative. The program’s curriculum also features courses on instructional leadership, including Curriculum, Learner Assessment, and Technology in Education; and Student Learning: Andragogy and Pedagogy (andragogy is defined as the practice and principles comprising adult education). The EdD program also requires courses that prepare students to lead educational institutions using business principles, such as Organizational Management and Culture; Finance and Business Administration; Accountability: Personnel Management and Accreditation; Community Engagement and Relations; and Working with Different Populations.
Interspersed amongst the core content and research coursework are skills-based courses that guide students through completing their final Capstone Project, which takes the form of a dissertation in practice that allows students to investigate an education challenge within their work context. Early in the program, students take two Capstone Project: Skills Demonstration courses, wherein they practice key writing skills that they will need to use in their dissertation and learn how to conduct ethically sound research when working with diverse populations of learners and educators. In the subsequent Capstone Project courses titled Dissertation, Service to Humanity I, II, and III, students work on their dissertation prospectus, write the introductory chapters of their dissertation, and complete the requirements for IRB approval, all with support and feedback from peers and guidance from their faculty advisors.
To further scaffold students’ dissertation work, the EdD in Education Administration and Leadership program requires two Summer Intensives, which students can attend on-campus or virtually. These two intensives are held in June during the first and second summers of students’ enrollment. In the first Summer Intensive, students meet with their dissertation advisor and faculty committee to refine their dissertation topic and approach, explore different research methodologies, and prepare to gather data for their study. In the second Summer Intensive, students meet again with their advisor and committee to prepare for their final dissertation defense.
Students bring everything they have learned in their content courses, research courses, skills-focused Capstone Project courses, and Summer Intensives sessions into their work on their dissertation. During the final terms of their enrollment, students attend four final Capstone Project courses, titled Dissertation Work, Intellectual Pursuit I, II, III, and IV. In these courses, students receive support from fellow students and from the course instructor, which supplements the advising students receive from their primary dissertation advisor and faculty committee. Through the multiple layers of dissertation-focused, peer-to-peer feedback and faculty mentorship that are embedded throughout the curriculum, the EdD in Education Administration and Leadership program provides students with ongoing guidance and resources as they investigate a problem of practice that affects learning outcomes within their work setting.
Note: Students in Touro University Nevada’s EdD in Education Administration and Leadership program may have the option to complete a concentration in either Higher Education Learning and Management or Jewish Education, although these concentrations may not be offered for each cohort.
For students who want to explore online EdD programs with specializations in areas other than Education Administration and Leadership, such as Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Technology, Special Education, or Transformative Change Leadership, there are numerous out-of-state colleges and universities offering online EdD programs that accept students from Nevada. Many of these out-of-state programs are fully online, while some require limited in-person residencies.
