The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley offers a hybrid-online Educational Studies Doctor of Education through its College of Education and Behavioral Sciences’ School of Teacher Education (in conjunction with UNC’s Extended Campus). The program includes a focus on Innovation and Education Reform, designed for educators interested in studying and implementing change in both school systems and educational policy. A total of 64 credit hours are required to earn the degree, which takes around four years of study. While the majority of coursework is delivered online, students must attend a five-day Doctoral Seminar course on UNC’s Loveland campus during each of their first three summers in the program. They are also required to present their dissertation defense in person during their final semester.

Program curriculum includes both an Educational Studies Core, featuring courses such as Introduction to Research Literature, Philosophical Foundations of Education, and Implementation and Evaluation of Curriculum, and a Research Core, with courses in Statistical Methods, Introduction to Qualitative Research, and Qualitative Case Study Research. The remaining credit hours are comprised mainly of the Innovation and Education Reform Cognate, which consists of eight courses: Foundations of Educational Research, Literacy as Social Practice, History of Education Reform and Change, Social Justice in Education Reform, Social Theory of Learning and Change, Perspectives on Curriculum, Contemporary School Reform, and Technology, Innovation, and Education. There are also 16 credit hours associated with students’ capstone dissertation. As an additional requirement in UNC’s Educational Studies EdD program, students must submit one paper to a professional journal for publication prior to their dissertation proposal hearing.

Students interested in other EdD specializations, such as K-12, Higher Education, or Organizational Leadership, may want to consider pursuing their degree online from a school in another state. Many colleges and universities across the country offer online EdD programs that accept out-of-state students from Colorado.
