Schools in Oklahoma with Online EdD Programs

Based in Ada, East Central University has an online Doctor of Education in Rural Education that is designed to empower students to identify, evaluate, and address challenges in rural education systems. This program features an Administration Track that all students take to learn about the diverse needs of rural public schools, and the role of administrators in meeting these needs. The EdD in Rural Education’s curriculum consists of 24 credit hours of core coursework, 21 credit hours of Administration Track coursework, 3 credit hours dedicated to an elective, and 12 credit hours of Applied Dissertation work, totaling 60 course credits.

The core courses for the EdD in Rural Education cover educational research techniques, rural education history and foundations, special programs leadership for rural schools, contemporary issues and student advocacy in rural education, organizational change and strategic planning, and public school finance. The Administration Track covers public school administration, instructional supervision, school governance fundamentals, curriculum development, and educational technology. For their one elective course, students can choose any graduate-level course, either within ECU’s Department of Education or outside of it. For their Applied Dissertation coursework, students take courses that support them in their writing of their prospectus, their design and implementation of their research study, and their analysis of their data to arrive at final conclusions for presentation to their faculty advisors.

Located in Bethany, Southern Nazarene University offers an online Doctor of Education in Administration and Leadership. This program is suited for professionals who are interested in positively impacting their educational institutions, organizations, and/or communities by leveraging advanced research skills, integrative leadership principles, and a Christian values-informed approach.

The program is comprised of a set curriculum of 16 courses (57 credits) that focus on advanced qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, visionary leadership, strategic planning, team-building, and organizational change leadership, all within the context of Christian service values. The online Ed.D. in Administration and Leadership also features an embedded dissertation process, with key dissertation milestones such as the writing of the first three chapters, the proposal defense, dissertation draft revisions, and final defense integrated into the curriculum from the beginning of students’ enrollment. The aim of the embedded dissertation is to ensure that students have a scaffold of support for their research work early on in the program.

The online Ed.D. in Administration and Leadership can be completed fully online, though students are encouraged to attend three campus-based intensives that are held at key times during students’ tenure in the program. These intensives are held at the SNU’s campus, and span a weekend in duration. There is an Orientation intensive at the beginning of students’ enrollment, which connects them to their professors, fellow students, and program staff. They subsequently have the option to attend a Proposal campus-based intensive, during which they work closely with faculty on their dissertation proposal and receive feedback. The Defense campus intensive enables students to hold their dissertation defenses in-person rather than remotely.

Students residing in Oklahoma who wish to pursue an online Ed.D. program in a specialization other than Rural Education or Administration and Leadership, such as programs in Instructional Technology, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Diversity and Multiculturalism, might benefit from exploring online Ed.D. programs offered by out-of-state schools. There are numerous colleges and universities nationwide that offer online Ed.D. programs in a variety of specializations, and which accept students from Oklahoma. While some of these programs may require one or more visits to campus for campus-based residencies or other in-person events (such as students’ final dissertation defense), there are also programs that are 100% online with no required face-to-face meetings.
